Dear Diary, Winona Ryder's Teen Angst Has A Body Count
A Heathers Film Review

In 2006 Entertainment Weekly released a list of what they believe are the 50 best high school movies, the bulk of these were released in the 80's. Among the top 5 films lay Heathers, a dark comedy starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater. What makes this film so spectacular? So groundbreaking? I feel that Heathers has paved the way for newer edgy films, such as Jawbreaker and Mean Girls. A myriad of elements contribute to this movies success in becoming a cult classic.

Heathers is about a high school girl named Veronica Sawyer (Ryder), who has it made. She's pretty, smart, and is part of the most popular group of girls in their school, called The Heathers, made up of 3 girls named Heather, and Veronica herself. The only problem? Veronica hates her friends. But everything changes when she meets mysterious Jason Dean, played by the ever dreamy Christian Slater. One night after a cool college party goes wrong, J.D. and Veronica devise a vengeful plan to get back at Heather Chandler, that goes wrong.

The performances in this film were topnotch, with Winona Ryder delivering believable lines and even more believable reactions, and Christian Slater channeling Jack Nicholson. Even the supporting actors and actresses were believable as typical 80's teenagers, which made the movie all the more hilarious. The dialogue was chock-full of the teenage lingo of the time, making it
completely amusing.

It is easy to see why Heathers is such a cult classic. It is cynical, dark, satirical, angsty, hilarious, and somewhat romantic (eh...). Everything needed for a perfect teen movie. If you have seen Heathers and are a fan, I recommend films such as Jawbreaker and Sugar and Spice
